Wikibooks: Consciousness studies

web resource — thomasr @ 11:35 pm

A new “Wikibook” has appeared on the subject of consciousness. Is the SCR forum up to it?

Wikibooks are electronic books that are part of the Wikimedia program of Open Publishing. The book can be found at:

Wikibooks

The book is freely available on the Internet and in my opinion it is a remarkably wide ranging attempt at describing the field of consciousness studies. However, the book is online so you can see for yourself.

A most interesting aspect of this book is that anyone can contribute to it. This sounds like a recipe for disaster but surprisingly this does not happen in Open Publishing. The most advanced Open Publishing project is the Internet encyclopedia called Wikipedia and this is now the most popular site on the Internet for factual content. Wikipedia first appeared in 2001. It has gained spectacular momentum in the past 18 months and is now being visited over 500,000 times a day! (see this page) . Wikibooks are a recent addition to the Wikimedia project and in the next two to three years may well undergo the exponential growth of Wikipedia.

Few people could be better qualified to edit this book than the subscribers to SCR so why not have a go?

The second part asks you some general demographic information (this information will not be published or used for anything other than statistical comparisons). Please be as specific as possible in your responses. The final question asks you if you would like to be informed of the results of the survey. Pain Resources

In the recent Webscan on HMS Beagle, Cindy Siewert localizes some of the web resources for the present knowledge on pain and related issues. Some of the features are links to brain scans of subjects in both chronic and acute pain.

WebscanIn the recent Webscan on HMS Beagle, Cindy Siewert localizes some of the web resources for the present knowledge on pain and related issues. Some of the features are links to brain scans of subjects in both chronic and acute pain.

“Pain – like few other things – unites all humans. We all suffer from it, at least now and then, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, nationality, race, or sexual orientation. Nevertheless, all of us experience pain in solitude, and communicating the actual experience is notoriously difficult. What one person considers a simple touch might be felt as painful by another. Pain can even be felt in parts of the body that no longer exist, as is clear from the perception of aches in phantom limbs, which are “invisible” limbs that often appear following amputation. According to The Pain Web, over 1,200 online sites – containing over 3 million pages – address the topic of pain. Consequently, this WebScan just scratches the surface of available resources.”
